چکیده

many characteristic furnace lines which the spark emits very faintly. An outstanding feature of these lines for the iron spectrum is a prevailing large separation and simple triplet structure. Lines of this class are often of special interest in the study of sun-spot spectra. The furnace offers unique facilities for the production of the inverse Zeeman effect when a plug is placed in the tube. The absorption spectra resulting from this arrangement were discussed in the preceding communication. An extended study was made of the magnetic components given in absorption by this method. No difference was observed as to character or magnitude of separation as compared with the effects for the emission spectrum. A means of direct comparison with the magnetic effects for absorption lines in the solar spectrum is thus afforded, which may be expected to be very useful in tests as to polarization and other features at various angles to the lines of force.

Fertilization Recovery after Defective Sperm Cell Release in Arabidopsis

In animal fertilization, multiple sperms typically arrive at an egg cell to "win the race" for fertilization. However, in flowering plants, only one of many pollen tubes, conveying plant sperm cells, usually arrives at each ovule that harbors an egg cell. Plant fertilization has thus been thought to depend on the fertility of a single pollen tube. Here we report a fertilization recovery phenome...

Plant Fertilization: Bursting Pollen Tubes!

Higher plants don't have motile sperm; they rely on pollen tubes to deliver them. Recent research has identified key components involved in pollen tube tip bursting that allow sperm release and fertilization.

Pollen tube contents initiate ovule enlargement and enhance seed coat development without fertilization

In angiosperms, pollen tubes carry two sperm cells toward the egg and central cells to complete double fertilization. In animals, not only sperm but also seminal plasma is required for proper fertilization. However, little is known regarding the function of pollen tube content (PTC), which is analogous to seminal plasma. We report that the PTC plays a vital role in the prefertilization state an...

Fertilization Requires Communication: Signal Generation and Perception During Pollen Tube Guidance

The generation of novel hybrid lines is critically limited by the compatibility between pollen and pistil and their ability to achieve successful seed formation. Fertilization in flowering plants requires the successful transfer of the male gametes from the pollen grain to the egg contained within an ovule. This occurs via the formation of a tubular protrusion from the pollen grain – the pollen...

Asymmetric reproductive interference: The consequences of cross‐pollination on reproductive success in sexual–apomictic populations of Potentilla puberula (Rosaceae)

Apomixis evolves from a sexual background and usually is linked to polyploidization. Pseudogamous gametophytic apomicts, which require a fertilization to initiate seed development, of various ploidy levels frequently co-occur with their lower-ploid sexual ancestors, but the stability of such mixed populations is affected by reproductive interferences mediated by cross-pollination. Thereby, repr...
